Research has shown that true collaboration is often hindered by power structures and other obstacles. How can we break down these barriers and achieve transformative collaboration? In this Aalto LASER Talk three speakers shared their research and practices on fusing diverse talents and perspectives, and discuss the outcomes, possibilities, and challenges of genuine collaboration. Markus Schmidt from Biofaction presented the…
LASER panel discussion: “Constructive Disturbances of Art in Science”
SinFonia partner Biofaction hosted a Leonardo LASER Talk (an acronym for Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) on May 15 at designforum Wien, MQ in Vienna, Austria. “Constructive Disturbances of Art in Science” introduced some truly cross-disciplinary science-art collaborations: synthetic biology, artificial intelligence in chemistry, plant based photography aka phytography, quantum computing, and slime mold meet music composition, visual arts, film,…
New Art-Science book out!
In “Grain & Noise – Artists in Synthetic Biology Labs”, SinFonia partner Biofaction presents collaborations between scientists and artists in the form of Artist-in-Lab residencies. These residencies may not only cause a productive disturbance for a day’s work in the laboratory, but also reveal new ways of understanding. Biofaction brought together four artists and synthetic biologists throughout Europe in a residence program…
Traces of Fluorine
We created an interactive museum installation: Traces of Fluorine. The exhibit showcases an archive of fluorinated plastics, so-called fluoropolymers, and introduces a more sustainable production method, currently being researched by our scientists. Visitors are invited to explore the drawers underneath the objects and complete a puzzle to find out what they are and where they have come from. They also are asked…
SinFonia Infographics
We created a new set of infographics about the history, context, and potential biological production of fluoropolymers. The informative slides explain our project’s aims, methods, and background in a simple and understandable way. Have a look at the whole set here!
Music from DNA: Creating a SinFonia inside a bacterial cell
PRESS RELEASE If you could listen to the DNA in your genes, how would it sound like? This question stood at the beginning of the groundbreaking collaboration between a musical composer and a microbiologist, and the answer to that question is now online and available to the public. Eduardo Miranda, a composer from the University of Plymouth, UK, worked with…
New Publication in Nature Communications by Loschmidt Laboratories
The research on protein dynamics of our project partners Loschmidt Laboratories (Department of Experimental Biology and RECETOX, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University) and International Clinical Research Center, St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications. Below is a short summary to give you an overview. You can access the full article on Nature Communications.…
2nd Hands-on Computational Enzyme Design Course
The Hands-on Computational Enzyme Design Course is a highly practical and interactive course meant primarily for protein and metabolic engineers with no prior experience in computer modelling and bioinformatics. Other experts willing to broaden their current computational protein design toolbox can also benefit from this course. A team of experts and software developers provide training on how to operate several…
Protein Engineering Portal by Loschmidt Laboratories
Loschmidt Laboratories of Masaryk University has launched a Protein Engineering Portal. The portal serves as a gateway to several web-based bioinformatics tools. The software tools can be used for designing proteins, analysis and research. Have a look at the portal and browse through the various useful tools such as EnzymeMiner, FireProt or Caver Web.
Our artist in residence has been revealed!
Biofaction organized an open call for our new Artist in Residence programm. The call received 166 submissions from 43 countries in total and around 30 submissions for SinFonia. The jury panel had the difficult task of selecting one artist for SinFonia among many interesting choices. We congratulate the winning artist Eduardo Miranda. He will be working at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, Technical University…
